Handcrafted Designer Tiles: Where to Use Them Sparingly
Small doses, big effect
Handcrafted and artisanal tiles carry a premium precisely because of their irregularity and hand-finished character, but that same quality makes them visually loud across a large area. They read best confined to a bounded space the eye naturally frames — a bathroom niche, a bar backsplash, a staircase riser, a border strip around a plainer field tile — rather than an entire floor.
- Niches and shower recesses: a contained area where a bold tile becomes a deliberate detail.
- Staircase risers: visible in short bursts as you move past, never overwhelming.
- Border or listello strips: a narrow band of pattern framing a larger plain floor or wall field.
- Kitchen islands or bar fronts: a vertical surface seen from a distance, where texture reads well.
