Designer Tile Combinations for a Balanced Interior
The one-loud-one-quiet rule
The most reliable way to combine designer tiles without a room feeling chaotic is to let exactly one surface carry pattern or colour and keep every other surface in that room plain. A patterned floor pairs with plain walls; a patterned accent wall pairs with a plain floor. Two patterned surfaces in the same sightline almost always compete rather than complement.
- Pair a matt floor with a glossy wall tile (or vice versa) — the finish contrast reads as intentional even in a neutral palette.
- Keep pattern-on-pattern combinations to tiles from the same manufacturer's range, designed to be paired together.
- Use plain tile in transition zones (corridors, thresholds) between two differently patterned rooms so the eye gets a visual break.
- Limit a strong colour tile to under 30% of any given wall or floor area unless it is the room's deliberate focal point.
